The Committee on Human Rights of the Chamber of Deputies approved outstanding indications and dispatched the Chamber, the bill that criminalizes incitement to violence and hatred. It also sanctions denialism, i.e. those who deny cases of human rights violations set out in official reports such as the Rettig and Valech commissions.
“Our country requires this law more urgently than ever, because with sadness we have seen how there are sectors that do not respect democracy more strongly, nor our native peoples, for example, in making racist chants,” said Mr Tucapel Jiménez.
The parliamentarian stated that “we also seek to protect the pain of relatives of DD rape victims. HH, that’s what modern societies have done, and we must continue down that path,” he stressed.
“In democracy, tolerance and respect for each other’s thinking is fundamental. Only in this way can we have a country that walks towards the dignity, justice and respect for the human rights of all people,” said Mr Jiménez.
In the case of denialism, the initiative provides for a maximum of 3 years in prison and a maximum fine of 3 million pesos. Incitement to physical violence and hatred was left with less drastic sanctions. In the case of a public official who performs these actions, he shall also suffer the penalty of disqualification in the exercise of his duties.
