President Donald Trump intends to nominate Federal Appeals Court Conservative Judge Amy Coney Barrett to fill the vacancy in the U.S. Supreme Court following the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, CNN reported Friday citing Republican sources.
Trump has said he would announce Saturday his choice to replace Ginsburg, a liberal icon who died on September 18 at age 87.
Barrett, 48, was appointed by Trump to the Chicago Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals in 2017 and is known for her conservative views on religious matters.
If confirmed, Trump’s nominee would give conservatives a 6-3 lead in the Supreme Court at a time of intense political divisions in the United States.
Barrett has been seen as a favorite for the position along with another appeals judge, Barbara Lagoa.
Trump’s nominee has what appears to be a clean path to Senate confirmation before the November 3 presidential election, as Republicans have a 53-47 majority and only two senators in his party oppose moving forward with the process.
