Molina was born in Mexico City in 1943 and was a chemical engineer graduated from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (1965); He then completed postgraduate studies at the University of Freiburg, Germany (1967) and received a phD in Physicochemistry from the University of California, Berkeley, united States (1972).
He was a pioneer and one of the world’s leading researchers of atmospheric chemistry. He co-authored, together with F.S. Rowland in 1974, the original article predicting the thinning of the ozone layer as a result of the emission of certain industrial gases, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which earned them the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. His research and publications on the subject also led to the United Nations Montreal Protocol, the first international treaty to effectively address an environmental problem of global scale and anthropogenic origin.
Professor Molina and his research group published a series of articles between 1976 and 1986 that identified the chemical properties of compounds that play an essential role in the breakdown of ozone in the stratosphere. Subsequently they demonstrated in the laboratory the existence of a new class of chemical reactions occurring on the surface of ice particles including those that are present in the atmosphere. They also proposed and demonstrated in the laboratory a new sequence of catalytic reactions that explain most of the ozone destruction in the polar stratosphere
