Can you imagine how menstruation lives who are on a street situation? was the question that prompted the People of the Street Foundation to create the #MenstruarEnCalle. The objective: to raise awareness of this reality, while taking concrete actions to help facilitate this biological process for those who do not have a safe place.
The campaign, which was launched during August, is currently in a stage of collecting contributions and menstrual hygiene items. After that, delivery will be made through on-the-spot kits, along with an awareness workshop regarding the use of different menstrual hygiene products. The action will begin in San Fernando, in two camps in the town, in order to decentralize such social initiatives.
Territorial days will reach shelters, camps, “the hard street” and two women’s pre-trial detention centres. The communes that will receive the intervention are: San Fernando, Independencia, Renca, Quinta Normal, San Joaquín, La Granja, Santiago, Recoleta, Pudahuel, Ovalle and Illapel.
For the Foundation, it is important to generate gender-sensitive programs for addressing the street situation. It is clear that the lack of this perspective in the development and implementation of public policies deepens the violence that women experience in Chile; menstrual poverty is one more variant of it. This is why the campaign is contextualized in the commemorative week of International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
For the task, Fundación will have the collaboration of Anti-Prison Action Network, Maisha Foundation, LEASUR, Pudahuel Joven and Community Action, Ruta Alba Norte y Sur (CSD Colo Colo), Travesti Action on Street, San Fernando Supply Network, Costureras a Toda Máquina, Centro de Estudiantes de Derecho Universidad de Los Andes, Fundación Trascender, Corporación Psoriasis de Chile and Betel Chile.
