The massacre
On 22 January, 19 charred bodies were located in the community of Santa Anita, Camargo, in Tamaulipas.
Most of the victims are known to be Guatemalan migrants heading for the United States. Mexican citizens also traveled with them, who, according to the Tamaulipas Prosecutor’s Office, were engaged in the illegal trafficking of people.
In addition, five people managed to survive the attack and are currently in the U.S. as protected witnesses.

According to Tamaulipas Attorney General Irving Barrios, the explanation for the massacre is the struggle between criminal groups over control of the territory (the Gulf Cartel and the Northeast Cartel, former division of Los Zetas).
So far 12 state police officers and eight national migration institute (INM) officials have been arrested and separated from their posts.

Among the crimes against them are those of qualified homicide, abuse of authority in the performance of administrative functions and falsehood in reports given to an authority as evidence from the crime scene is alleged to have been altered.
For now their statements will remain secret so as not to harm both defendants and victims, because the investigation could be damaged.
