translated from Spanish: Zaldivar moralizes the judiciary, extending its mandate is not unconstitutional, says AMLO

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador noted that arturo Zaldívar’s two-year term extension as president of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation.
In his morning conference, the representative insisted that he supports the two-year extension if that will allow the judiciary to be reformed.
“I understand that (enlargement) is constitutional, that it is not unconstitutional, but that they will decide in the Chamber of Deputies, my opinion I have already externed, is that the minister president is a full, honest man,” he said.

“(Enlargement) is not immoral on the contrary, I argue that he helps the judiciary to be moralized, most come from the old regime, there is no other profile (to assume the presidency of the SCJN), rather it is the circumstances,” he added.
López Obrador also questioned the voices against him within Congress, and recalled that the Chamber of Deputies itself has approved other re-elections or extension of mandates for state governments.
He noted that those who oppose reform within the judiciary do so so that judges and ministers would continue to serve the Mafia and political power.
“I do not give instructions or meddle in matters that have to do with other powers, but I do think reform of the judiciary is indispensable because there are good judges and magistrates, but also many are acting as a slogan,” he said.

However, the President clarified that if the Chamber of Deputies decides that the extension of mandate is unconstitutional, he would respect it as “I cannot support something that violates the Constitution”.
Last Thursday, a majority of senators headed by Morena, the PRI and the Green Party endorsed extending for two more years the presidency of Minister Arturo Zaldívar at the SCJN.
Lawmakers achieved this with an aggregate last-minute reservation to the opinion adopted in committees, and read in rostrum in less than a minute and a half.
The inclusion of such a reservation was so surprising that opposition lawmakers did not even ask for the floor before it was voted on, prompting a series of complaints and questions.
