Former U.S. President Donald Trump said Thursday that he is “100% considering” running for the 2024 presidential election and sees Ron DeSantis, the governor of Florida and one of his strongest allies, as his possible formula.
During an interview with the Fox channel, the Republican said the idea of a Trump-DeSantis formula seems to “love.”
Trump, who finished his four-year term last January 20 after being defeated last November by Democrat Joe Biden, has repeatedly pointed to the possibility of embarking on a campaign for the 2024 presidential.
“I’m studying very seriously, rather than seriously, but for legal reasons I don’t really want to talk about it yet. It’s too early,” Trump said on April 20, also to the Fox channel.
The Republican, who settled in Palm Beach, Florida since last January, has received a pilgrimage from politicians at his Mar-a-Lago club in search of his blessing for the 2022 legislative elections, which are for now his priority, according to Republican analysts.
Trump, who was DeSantis’ political godfather in the 2018 election, has been very close to the governor.
“He’s done a great job as governor,” Trump said thursday during the interview. DeSantis is “a friend of mine” and “a great guy,” Trump told journalist Maria Bartiromo. “I supported Ron and, after I backed him up, he took off like a rocket,” he recalled.
DeSantis hosted the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Orlando last February, in which he was the favorite Republican candidate for the 2024 election in a survey of that forum.
Meanwhile, Trump and his vice president Mike Pence, who did not attend the CPAC, walked away after CPAC refused to help him in their efforts to reverse last November’s election results, in which Biden won.
Now President Biden, who serves his first 100 days in office, gave his first address to Congress on Wednesday, highlighting his achievements during three months of government.
