World.- Pfizer’s vaccine is also licensed for adolescents between the ages of 12 and 15. The analysis of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) has determined that it is safe and effective in this age group too, and that it should be used in the same way as in the other ages, that is, two doses separated by a period of three weeks.
The European regulator had already given the green light to use this vaccine from the age of 16, and this afternoon announced its decision to extend the age group from 12. A conclusion reached after a study of about 2,000 adolescents between 12 and 15 years old, which has shown that the immune response is similar to the group of young adults (between 16 and 25 years).
Among these adolescents aged 12 to 15, of the 1005 who received the vaccine, none developed covid, compared with 16 cases in the 978 adolescents who received a placebo injection. These results would show that the vaccine is 100% effective, although the EMA itself points out that the true percentage should be between 75 and 100%.

Side effects in adolescents aged 12 to 15 years are also similar to those that appear in those over 16, with occasional discomfort at the injection site, tiredness and headache, but they are usually mild and disappear within a few days.
Pfizer is at the moment the only vaccine authorized for this age group, although another pharmaceutical company, Moderna, has already carried out some tests and the EMA expects that it will soon submit its authorization as well.
On the other hand, regarding the use of AstraZeneca, the European agency maintains its recommendation to use both doses of this vaccine, except in cases where the first injection has caused some of the rare cases of thrombosis. However, EMA experts also recognise that the few studies available so far on the AstraZeneca and Pfizer blend – there are two, one German and one Spanish – indicate that the combination is safe and effective. Given the limited data on this mixture for the time being, the EMA will continue to collect more information.
