translated from Spanish: Face-to-face classes are a failure, the government must suspend them: FNERRR Michoacán

Mexico City. – A month before the end of the school year, the return to face-to-face classes was carried out on June 7. In this regard, leaders of the National Federation of Revolutionary Students “Rafael Ramirez” (FNERRR) declared that it was a failure and that it should be suspended, since the number of educational centers that decided to resume the face-to-face model is almost zero. On the other hand, they recalled that neither the Secretariat of Public Education (SEP) nor the federal government listened to the demand that the return to school should be safe and held these bodies responsible for the contagions that occur between the student community and their families.
The Ministry of Public Education (SEP) reported that only one million 631,235 students in 24,406 schools from basic to higher level returned to face-to-face classes; in Mexico City, 88.7% of schools remain closed; and in 12 states they definitely did not give in to the call for a return to the face-to-face format. Isaias Chanona Hernandez, national leader of the FNERRR, said in this regard that Mexican families chose not to send their children to classrooms because of the multiple demonstrations against the return to face-to-face classes. The student leader stated that the FNERRR’s call for such a measure not to be established was widely echoed in national and international media, and acknowledged that the majority of the population was sensible in responding to the protests, “and in not heeding a merely electoral call, which does not guarantee the health of the students.”

He explained that young people, children who are attending schools are in permanent possibility of covid-19 infections, since it will not be possible to avoid crowds when moving from home to schools, in addition to the fact that there are not adequate conditions in schools to maintain sanitary measures, “in many cases there is not even water for children to wash their hands”.
And, according to data from the SEP, 55 thousand schools in our country do not have drinking water. For its part, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) reported that 19 percent of schools in Mexico lack toilets, and the collective “Agua Capital” says that 48 percent of public schools lack drainage.
In view of the basic deficiencies of the educational centers, which are not resolved immediately, the FNERRR demanded that only 70% of the population be vaccinated to return to the classrooms. Chanona Hernández added that this demand began at least two months ago through social networks and with rallies and marches on public roads, “however, neither the Ministry of Health (SSA), nor the SEP, nor President López Obrador, listened to our just request; it is clear then that the government of the 4Q is insensitive and that its policies are moving in the direction of the possession of power, as this was seen with the electoral measure of the return to classes, “he explained.
Finally, the students of the FNERRR called on the SEP to meet the needs of schools as soon as possible and to immediately suspend face-to-face classes, since it is clear that the majority of the student population is not willing to risk the contagion of Covid-19 and what is being caused is greater educational inequality between the few who are in face-to-face mode and the majority who continue in the virtual format.
