One of the images that has left the electoral strip for the primaries has been the one that was seen during the space of Ignacio Briones. In one part, the Evópoli candidate, who was driving a crane, covers with dirt a tombstone that reads “Augusto Pinochet.”
Jokes aside on social media, not all people liked that scene, criticism that even came from Pinochet’s daughter, Jacqueline Pinochet Hiriart, who expressed her displeasure through a letter sent to the newspaper El Mercurio.
“It is with deep astonishment that I have seen in the political fringe how Mr. Ignacio Briones uses, for his political objective, the figure and the memory that many good people still have for my father, Don Augusto Pinochet Ugarte,” he begins by saying.
Along these lines, he states that he “finds it despicable to abuse it, to try to cover it with dirt, which is impossible for history to allow, in order to obtain the vote of those who blame him for their own mistakes.”
“I do not represent anyone in my family, I only point out what my heart dictates as the youngest daughter of a great father and a great Chilean, who does not deserve to be used for unscrupulous purposes of a candidate who lost many followers with his blunder,” he adds.
The letter is concluded by assuring that “history is the only one that will be able to corroborate, one day, the true dimension of the figure of General Pinochet.”
