In total tension, the day of installation of the Constitutional Convention began this morning, after, in the run-up to the ceremony, the Carabineros acted in the face of disorder in the security perimeter located in the Plaza de Armas using tear gas and water-throwing cars.
Faced with this, and at the moment when the national anthem was being sued, a faction of the conventional ones protested and subsequently requested the suspension of the beginning of the ceremony, a request to which the secretary of the Tricel that heads it, Carmen Gloria Valladares, agreed, alluding to the fact that relatives of members of the constituent assembly had been affected.
The suspension, Valladares said, will last until 12 noon.
The ceremony had begun almost an hour late, after several demonstrations with which conventional marched to the former Congress.
At today’s event, the constituents will accept their position and elect the presidency and vice-presidency of the body.
The 155 members of the body – whose composition is gender-equal and considers 17 representatives of the native peoples – will be able to define their board of directors, working dynamics, among other aspects to build the new text, which will later be submitted to a ratification plebiscite.
