translated from Spanish: “Avenida Charly García”: the mural that seeks to change the name to Coronel Díaz

The plastic artist Tian Firpo and the designer Marcelo Ferrán made a mural of 9 x 7 meters on the terrace of the historic building where Charly García lives on Coronel Díaz Avenue, steps from Santa Fe, with the aim that that street located in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Palermo will one day be transformed into “Charly García Avenue”.

“Avenida Charly García” a tribute to the Argentine musician

The work corresponds to “Going from bed to living room”, an ideal slogan amid restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic and the keyboard is a replica of the Oberheim that the musician used to record the iconic 1982 album. “Although in that song he is not using that keyboard, at least in the introduction, it is a very representative keyboard of the album,” Firpo clarified in dialogue with Telam.

The mural was planned for at least four months, but was painted in just three days. Marcelo Ferrán is a neighbor of Charly and told the press that he spent so many days of quarantine on that terrace, as far as the sounds of the guitar or the piano, of the musician with a two-tone mustache, that the idea was shot at him.” I was very doubtful at first I would tell you because it seemed crazy, a delirium. Then the days went by, we got together and did meetings there on the terrace and we shaped it. At one point we came to a result that we said ‘well, it looks like this has its feet and head’. There Marcelo contacted Mecha, who is Charly’s girlfriend, they had a meeting, showed him the idea on a paper that we had drawn and printed, and Mecha caught fire. So imagine us,” Tian Firpo told Telam. On the name of the mura the artist stated: “It’s something he said in some interviews. Charly feels her own the avenue, she feels it as her place in the world. And what we think with Marcelo is that Charly is not just anymore musician, he is one of our most important musicians. And this mural is a hug to Charly for all that she gave us.” The law says that you can not designate streets with names of people before ten years after his death however this tribute has already obtained a petition on the platform Change.org to gather signatures on the subject.
