Mexico’s government said Tuesday that there is an uptick in coronavirus infections in the country, although it detailed that mortality is not growing at the same rate due to the vaccination process.
“We have a situation where there is an uptick, which is the third uptick that has occurred throughout the period of the epidemic,” Undersecretary of Health Hugo Lopez-Gatell said at a news conference.
“Fortunately and with a known reason, which is mainly vaccination, neither deaths nor hospitalizations increase at that rate,” he added.

The official said that during the first half of June there was a 22% uptick in estimated cases of the disease.
However, he explained that hospitalization is growing more slowly and that bed occupancy has remained between 15% and 20%.

“We were able to reduce mortality and severe cases because the vaccines available have that as their main effect,” he said.
Mexico, with a population of 126 million, had 2,541,873 confirmed cases of coronavirus and 233,689 deaths as of Monday.
