translated from Spanish: abide by health measures and do not rely on vaccination

While vaccination reaches higher coverage in Mexico, it will be very important that this summer phase, reopening of tourism and many economic activities, the population continues to adopt protective measures especially when physical distancing is more difficult, recommended Ciro Ugarte, director of Health Emergencies of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).
Questioned by Animal Politico, during a press conference, about what diagnosis this organization makes of the situation in Mexico, Ugarte said that in fact the number of cases shows a significant increase, on Tuesday there were 13,853 confirmed cases and 341 deaths, he said, while the overall mortality rate is 1,850 deaths per million inhabitants, “that is, we are in an increasing phase.”

The occupancy of general beds and ventilators has risen some points, he said, “surely if the number of cases increases this will also go up in higher numbers. Vaccination coverage in Mexico is around 43%, ages 18 and older and additional vaccine shipments are being received, so vaccination will continue.”
Despite vaccination, you should not let your guard down
Ugarte specified that 43% of that vaccinated population is the population at greatest risk, so it is expected then that the mortality rate can be maintained in this new increase in cases.
But the third wave represents a challenge, he explained, because on the one hand the advance of vaccination gives a sense of security “and we would all like to get out of this pandemic, at the same time it has been shown, once again, that when we lower our guard, the number of cases increases significantly; so (stopping contagion) is a shared responsibility between the population, health authorities and political authorities.”

Paho’s Director of Health Emergencies stressed that the population must continue to abide by safety measures and not be trusted by the vaccine, and concluded: “Let us hope that this increase in cases can be controlled in relation to the capacity of the health services, which still have capacity, and, therefore, that the economic reopening does not cause a greater impact.”
