A quieter week is coming up than the recent ones. The market’s focus will be on the economic impact of the growing third wave of Covid in Europe and the United States, the latest employment data in Chile and what was discussed at the central bank’s last Monetary Policy Meeting. Find out about this and more in a new edition of El Semanal.
We have to be very careful to read the economic and social picture that is coming. This pandemic forced us to move forward a decade in digitalization, but at the same time, we went back more than a decade in social welfare, and inequality is at its peak. The 2007 crisis hurt us all, and it hurt the richest a lot. But this crisis is different, the most advantaged have become even richer, and the fight against poverty has gone back 15 years in Latin America. Columnist Pavel Castillo addresses the issue.
More than fifty countries tried to bring their positions on environmental policy closer together between Sunday and Monday in London convened by the United Kingdom, host of the COP26 climate summit, a hundred days before the event is held. Unedited with details.
From the point of view of the country’s political institutions, the next government will have to be transitional. And its essential requirements will be that it enable and help validate the constituent process, that it exercise power with caution and temperance, that it enable the conditions for an economic, social, and political transformation of the country, within the democratic and institutional channel. A non-partisan Presidency, dialogue-based, austere in the use of force, with a political projection at the level of what is merely indispensable, which enables and sustains itself in political alliances that allow an interfunctional dialogue with the National Congress, in order to favor a cooperative and non-controversial legislative agenda. If the results of last Sunday’s primaries are foreboding of something like this, it is possible that the country is on track. It is not a problem of young and old, but of politics and constitutional pact, and of democratic governance. This Monday we highlight an Editorial theme.
