Mexico’s unemployment rate fell to 4% in June, 1.5 percentage points less than in the same month last year, the National Institute of Statistics (Inegi) reported on Monday.
Inegi added that the employed population stood at 55.1 million people in the period, a figure 7 million higher than that recorded in June 2020.
For its part, the Economically Active Population (EAP), which includes all citizens willing to work, stood at 57.4 million people, 6.5 million more than the same month last year, when the majority of the population was confined by the coronavirus emergency.

The underemployed population, who reported having the need and availability to work longer hours, was 6.8 million people, 2.8 million fewer than in June 2020.
In addition, the population in the labor informality, that is, those who work in unregistered microbusinesses or who work without the protection of social security, stood at 30.5 million people during June.

According to Inegi, there are 2.3 million people unemployed, equivalent to a rate of 4% of the EAP. Compared to June 2020, the unemployed population decreased by 484 thousand people and the Unemployment Rate (TD) decreased by 1.5 percentage points.
The Mexican economy, the second largest in Latin America after Brazil, plunged 8.5% in 2020, under the impact of the pandemic.
In the first quarter of this year, GDP grew by 0.8% compared to the previous quarter, a figure higher than the 0.4% previously reported by Inegi.
For this year, the Mexican economy could rebound between 6 and 6.5%, according to estimates of the government and the autonomous Bank of Mexico (central).
