The men’s volleyball team beat Brazil and won the bronze medal in Tokyo 2020, the third for the national delegation in these Olympic Games, and the second in the history of Argentine volleyball, after the one achieved in Seoul 1988.Curiously, in the Japanese capital there were several winks that linked the feat of Seoul with that of Tokyo, 33 years apart.
First of all, both tournaments were played on Asian soil, to which the two selected arrived with Olympic diplomas: the team that competed in Seoul had obtained it in Los Angeles 1984, while the current selection took it in Rio de Janeiro 2016.In addition, in the Group Stage, both selected were part of Group B. In Seoul, Argentina shared a zone with the United States, France and Tunisia (in addition to the Netherlands and Japan) as well as in Tokyo. The most incredible thing of all? The two matches for the bronze medal were against Brazil and ended with the same result: 3-2 in favor of Argentina. Finally, the two medalist teams had a Conte in the squad. In Seoul, there was Dad Hugo, one of the best players in volleyball history who is now a commentator on TyC Sports, while in Tokyo there’s Facundo, who will now know what it’s like to get on an Olympic podium. In fact, Hugo and Facundo became the first father-son duo in the history of our sport to win an Olympic medal at different Games.
