The Constitutional Court (TC) already has a new president. This is the academic of the Catholic University, Juan José Romero, who will replace María Luisa Brahm.
It was not an easy choice until white smoke came out in the body defending the Constitution. For the final election of the new president of the TC, who among other things has the decisive vote in case of a tie, two names arrived: the aforementioned Romero -close to Iván Aróstica- and Miguel Ángel Fernández -close to the outgoing Brahm, who was also known for being a former adviser to President Sebastián Piñera.
If the concept of seniority prevailed – as in the Supreme Court – the name chosen should be Romero. And that’s what ultimately happened, as he got more than the six votes needed to win the job. He won with the votes of Rodrigo Pica, Pía Silva, José Ignacio Vásquez, Nelson Pozo, Cristián Romero, Iván Aróstica, Gonzalo García and Fernández himself.
Romero, son of the current ambassador to Italy and former president of the Senate, Sergio Romero (RN), is an expert in Constitutional Law and Economic Law and had already been a candidate to command the TC in 2019, but Brahm finally prevailed. Since 2005 he is a professor at the Faculty of Law of the PUC, being also director of Postgraduate Studies in the same house of studies.
Romero’s presence at the helm of the TC will be brief, as it would not last more than seven months. The reason is that in March he will complete his nine-year term, a date that cannot be extended and on which he will have to leave the TC.
