translated from Spanish: “These are issues that are going to make us design a different country”: they approve at the Convention a new Commission on Knowledge, Science and Technology

The Rules Committee of the Constitutional Convention unanimously approved the new Commission on Knowledge Systems, Science and Technology, which will address institutionality, fiscal spending and public policies in Culture, Arts, Humanities, Science and Technology. It also incorporates the Right to Science, Knowledge and Technology; the role of the State, as well as budget and investment in these areas.
After the approval of the Commission, the proposal will have to go to the plenary where the 155 conventional will have to vote on the initiative.
The creation of the commission was proposed on Monday to the Regulation Commission, by the constituent and scientist Cristina Dorador Movimiento Independientes del Norte), with the support of several conventions of the Regulation Commission. It also had the support of more than 60 organizations and more than 1,300 people linked to scientific research, environmental conservation, the development of the arts, the humanities and other areas of knowledge.
The request is based on the State’s duty to recognize, guarantee and promote the exercise of the right to know, to creation and to science, as well as the relationship between the production of knowledge and integral development.
The conventional Ignacio Achurra (I approve Dignity), said that he believes “that this marriage between the sciences, the arts and culture is fundamental, it speaks of the issues of the future, in another way of understanding the productive matrix of our country. We have every confidence that it will be adopted by the plenary of the Convention.”
Cristina Dorador, meanwhile, pointed out that “these are transversal themes that will make us design a different country, emphasizing knowledge and human work in the context of nature”.
“It is a great step for our country, because at the constitutional level we will be able to deal with these issues that are so relevant and that have historically been relegated to different ministries and offices, and now they are finally given a place they deserve. I would like to thank the members of the Convention who sponsored this initiative in the Committee on the Rules of Procedure, the Rules of Procedure, who voted unanimously for the initiative that we are presenting as an indication. We are working to ensure that knowledge and science have the place it deserves in the country,” dorador said.
