translated from Spanish: New change in route of the Mayan Train in Yucatan: it will not enter Mérida

The National Fund for the Promotion of Tourism (Fonatur) confirmed a new change in the route of the Mayan Train in the state of Yucatan, where the work will not enter the city of Merida, as previously planned.
According to the authorities in charge of the train, to make the construction time more efficient “it was necessary to modify the route, since problems in construction and mobility issues within the city must be avoided”, since it is intended to conclude the work by 2024.

This implies that for now the construction of the La Plancha station will not begin, and that the Mayan Train station in the city will be located in the Teya area.

“The current administration will leave integrated the projects around the station located in the polygon known as La Plancha, as well as the secondary works that were contemplated in this area, for consideration and possible construction in the coming years by the corresponding instances,” Fonatur said in a statement.
This is the second modification in the route of the train in less than a week, after the director of Fonatur, Rogelio Jiménez Pons, announced the modification of the route of the Mayan Train in Campeche, so as not to enter the city, and move the station to the periphery.
This change would prevent the eviction of about 300 families living in that area, according to the Tres Barrios Collective, which welcomed the decision.
The collective assured that they will not desist from the amparo trials “until there is some legal guarantee that gives us certainty that this whole nightmare is over.”
They also demanded modification of existing train tracks and a public apology from the authorities.
