‘Vaccination of minors is not subject to particular interests’: AMLO

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said that the vaccination of minors against COVID will be determined by what the health authorities indicate and subject to a public policy, not to “interests of a person or a group.”
A court recently ordered the federal government to vaccinate all children ages 12 to 17 against COVID-19, even those without serious illnesses.
The secretary of the Seventh District Court in Naucalpan, State of Mexico, acting as judge, Claudia Irene Gámez Galindo, granted a definitive suspension to a minor; the interim measure has general effects.

In its resolution, the court gave 48 hours for the health authorities to modify the National Vaccination Policy and consider all minors in immunization with Pfizer, the only one authorized so far for those ages.
“It is emphasized that the effects of this precautionary measure include not only the minor complainant, but all those under 18 years of age,” the resolution states.
In this regard, López Obrador said that it is only the decision of a judge, but it needs to be resolved in other instances, so it is not final.

During his morning conference he assured that the amparo protects the person who requests it but cannot be extended.
“You cannot define a public policy based on the interest of a person or a group. So what is the state for and what is the welfare state for? Legally this will be respected but at the same time it will go to the corresponding instance to clarify.”
“We are going to be respectful of the law … it is an instance, it is not yet res judicata, the process is not finished.”

The president reiterated that he does not refuse to apply the vaccine to minors, “it is that there is no medical recommendation in that regard. They still don’t define, because if it can cause harm, then we have to wait for each other.”
AMLO authorizes $180 million pesos for Patria vaccine
López Obrador announced that 180 million pesos were authorized to advance research into the Mexican vaccine against COVID-19, Patria.
“The National Council of Science and Technology (Conacyt), the research team, has the full support. We have just authorized 180 million pesos to support the investigation,” he said.
