“Portrait of a Woman on Fire”, the film by Céline Sciamma, hits theaters

This Thursday, October 21, “Portrait of a Woman on Fire”, the award-winning French film released in 2019 directed by Céline Sciamma (The Band of girls, Tomboy), arrives in Argentine theaters. It will be available at Cinépolis Recoleta, Cinemark Palermo, Cine Lorca, Atlas Patio Bullrich, Multiplex Belgrano, Cabildo Multiplex, Showcase Belgrano, Showcase Norte, Showcase Córdoba, Cinema Paradiso, Cines del centro, América.La story takes us back to 1770 to tell us the story of Marianne, a painter who must make the marriage portrait of Héloïse, a young woman who has just left the convent and who does not accept her fate as a married woman and refuses to pose. Marianne must work in secret, and for this she pretends to be a lady-in-company, in order to observe her during the day and paint her at night. Their relationship becomes more intense as they share together Héloïse’s last moments of freedom before their wedding. The story stars Valeria Golino (The Summer House, Figila Mia), Adèle Haenel (A People and Its King, In Liberté!) and Noémie Merlant (A French Seducer, Unexpected).

“The reality that the problems come from afar does not mean that they have ceased to be valid, especially when it comes to a story so little told: that of women artists and that of women in general. When I dove into documentation, I knew very little about the reality of women painters of that time. He knew prominent figures who proved his existence: Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun, Artemisia Gentileschi, Angelica Kauffmann,” the director said in a statement. Then he continued: “But the difficulty in finding information and documentation has not been an impediment to verify the existence of a true female artistic boiling in the second half of the eighteenth century. There were many painters who existed at that time, mainly portraitists.” At that time there were already female art critics and demands for greater levels of equality and visibility. In fact, a hundred women painters managed to have a successful career and many of their works are in the collections of the main art galleries in the world. However, history has left them aside,” he concluded.
