U.S. Consulate Issues Travel Alert for Violence in Matamoros

The U.S. Consulate General in Matamoros issued a travel alert Saturday following clashes, shootings, blockades and burning of cars on Oct. 22.
In the face of violence, officials at the U.S. consulate in Matamoros will restrict their movements to their homes, work and U.S. ports of entry during daylight hours and take refuge there between 7:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.
In addition, the State Department advised U.S. citizens not to travel to Tamaulipas due to the crime and kidnapping that is recorded.

The alert asked U.S. citizens to assess their personal safety and movements throughout Matamoros.
Yesterday, a group of armed civilians attacked state police and elements of the Army in the downtown area of this city, which led to persecutions and shootings in several areas, leaving a balance of four people dead and three arrested.

The State Coordination Group for the Construction of Peace in Tamaulipas reported On Saturday that the detainees and three dead are members of the Gulf Cartel.
The governor of Tamaulipas, Francisco García Cabeza, confirmed that one of the dead is Ariel Treviño “El Tigre”, leader of the Gulf Cartel.  
“During the events, a civilian person died collaterally. Two people were injured, who have already been discharged,” he said in a statement.
Recently, German authorities issued a travel alert for citizens visiting Mexico, following the shooting in Tulum, Quintana Roo, which left two foreign tourists dead and three more injured.
