WHO asks to cancel celebrations for omicron; Mexico does not suspend activities

“A cancelled event is better than a cancelled life. It is better to cancel now and celebrate later, than to celebrate now and mourn later”: these were the words of the director of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom, about the high risk of COVID cases rising in the world for holidays and holidays.
From Geneva, he warned that the omnicron variant of the coronavirus “is spreading significantly faster than the delta,” and that it is “more likely that people who have been vaccinated or recovered from COVID can become infected or reinfected.”
“There is no doubt that the increase in social mix during the holiday period in many countries will lead to an increase in cases, saturation of health systems and more deaths,” he said.

Tedros indicated that the weariness of citizens is understandable, but insisted that the fastest way to “return to normal” is to “make the difficult decisions that have to be made,” which in some cases could mean “the cancellation or delay of events.”

Celebrations are not suspended in Mexico
In Mexico, events have not been canceled. Since December 16, a Christmas festival is held in the Zócalo of Mexico City, organized by the capital government, where various musical groups and pastorelas are presented.

Asked if celebrations would be suspended in the capital, the head of government, Claudia Sheinbaum, said on Tuesday that they will not be canceled before the ómicron variant, since there is no indicator that warns that cases are on the rise.
At a press conference, he said that “there will be no suspension of activities, but as always, we will be very responsible and in case we see that infections and hospitalizations increase we would make all the orientations to the population.”

In addition, on the first of December, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador held the ‘AMLOFEST’ to celebrate the third anniversary of his inauguration. The event was attended, according to data from the Secretariat of Citizen Security of the capital, 250 thousand people.
