Cofepris authorizes emergency use of Cuban abdala vaccine

The Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris), authorized for emergency use the Cuban abdala vaccine against COVID-19.
The agency reported that the Committee on New Molecules issued its favorable opinion regarding the biological, and in addition, personnel specialized in vaccines analyzed the files, certifying that the biological meets the requirements of quality, safety and efficacy necessary to be applied.

Abdala is the first vaccine of Latin American origin to be evaluated by this body.

In a statement, he said that Cofepris decisions are recognized by several countries in the region, so approved vaccines are likely to be used in other nations.

Abdala, along with Soberana 02 and Soberana Plus, is one of Cuba’s vaccines that have been used to immunize more than 3 million people in that country.
Cuba is the only Latin American country that has its own vaccines, however they have not been recognized by the WHO, until now.
In Mexico there are nine vaccines approved by authorities against COVID: Pfizer-BioNTech, AstraZeneca, CanSino Biologics, Sputnik V, Sinovac, Covaxin, Janssen and Moderna, and Sinopharm, authorized only on August 26.
