Universal Guaranteed Pension: Government will wait for discussion in the Senate before going to the TC for tax on the “super rich”

The Chamber of Deputies approved the project that establishes the financing of the Universal Guaranteed Pension (PGU) promoted by the Executive, including, of course, the controversial tax on the “super rich” presented by opposition legislators. Given this, the Minister of Finance, Rodrigo Cerda, announced constitutional reservation on the part of the Government anticipating that they will go to the Constitutional Court if Parliament supports said tax. He also explained that the reservation of constitutionality for “super rich” is based on “several reasons.” First, “it is an exclusive matter of the President of the Republic and we have to worry about taking care of the institutionality” and “it also worries us, because we believe that it does not collect what it thinks.” We hope that what we can do is dialogue and reach agreement and we will not have to delay it. If this unfortunately continues its course, it forces us to go to the TC only for the sake of taking care of the institutionality. We have done everything possible to dialogue with different actors so that this can move forward, and we will continue to do so,” he said. For his part, his counterpart from the Segpres, Juan José Ossa, valued that the initiative will advance, however, he said that “the way in which the opposition, the current opposition, presented an indication that is unconstitutional and that they know is unconstitutional, will weigh on him for the next four years when he is government.” They will not be able to say, they will not be able to look us in the face, pointing out that they have the exclusive initiative. And I want to say that it was the President-elect’s own conglomerate, the deputies of Apruebo Dignidad, who promoted that indication. I think you are having bread for today and hunger for tomorrow, so I invite you to hopefully modify that behavior,” he added. In that line, the Secretary of State said that before resorting to the TC “we are going to wait and we are going to see how progress is made in the Senate.” We are confident that not only will the Senate consider this to be an unconstitutional issue, but that the senators will have the vision regarding this reflection that I make. When they are government, it will not be easy for them to have had this previous behavior,” he concluded.
