CIDE Community denounces new attempt to reform statutes

The Permanent Academic Assembly of CIDE warned of a new attempt to reform the statutes of the Center for Economic Research and Teaching, which aims to modify the process and requirements for appointing authorities.
Through a statement, the Assembly expressed its concern because “in an interview in La Jornada on January 16, Dr. Romero Tellaeche affirmed that there will be a new call to reform the Statutes of CIDE, despite the fact that no reform has been submitted to the Academic Council.”
According to what was mentioned by the director of CIDE in the interview, “the possibility that the academic secretary can also be an external professor will be reviewed.”
According to the statements of Romero Tellaeche, the call to the General Assembly of the CIDE would be on Monday, January 24 at 9:00 am.

For the members of the Assembly, “Dr. Romero Tellaeche is trying to reform the statutes to correct the illegalities inherent in the process of his appointment and in that of the head of the office of the Academic Secretary.”
“Faced with this new attempt, we ask the Secretariat of the Civil Service to ensure compliance with the Statutes, the members of the General Assembly to listen to the voice of the community of the institution and not accept this authoritarian coup. And we demand that Conacyt make public the convocation and the session of the General Assembly,” they said in the statement.

The National Council of Science and Technology (Conacyt) had convened the Assembly of Associates of CIDE on January 14, with the aim of modifying the statutes of the research center, however the meeting was suspended.
Although there was a quorum to carry out the virtual meeting, the representative of the Bank of Mexico argued that he had not received the call in time, so the head of Conacyt, María Elena Álvarez-Buylla, suspended the meeting.
In the call made for the extraordinary session of January 14, the agenda indicated a proposal to modify the role of the Board of Directors of CIDE in the appointment of the director.
The article that is intended to be modified stands out, since it was with which the student and academic community of CIDE took refuge to demonstrate the illegality with which Romero Tellaeche had been appointed as general director, and that led to the seizure of the facilities that was maintained until last January 15, when students left the facility in Santa Fe, because of the uptick in COVID cases.
