Quarrel in Cereso de Colima leaves 8 inmates dead and 7 injured

A brawl inside the Center for Social Readaptation (Cereso) in Colima left eight people dead and seven injured.
The Secretariat of Public Security (SSP) of the entity reported that the violent events began at 9:00 a.m. in dormitories A and B of the prison, between two groups of people deprived of liberty.
He explained that 9:03 a.m. detonations were heard, so elements of the state agency intervened with the support of the State Prosecutor’s Office, the National Guard and the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena).

Upon entering two of the dormitories they found seven dead people and eight wounded who were transferred to various hospital units; one of the injured subsequently died.

After the review, the agency reported that several sharp weapons and a firearm were found in the dormitories; and that, around 10:00 a.m., full control of Cereso was regained.

“Elements of the Investigative Police of the FGE are inside the Cereso carrying out the investigations on the facts, for the purpose of exercising the corresponding criminal actions,” the agency said.
The governor of Colima, Indira Vizcaíno, said that she has asked the Attorney General’s Office (FGE) to carry out the pertinent investigations for the demarcation of responsibilities.

The state government regretted what happened and the loss of life; said that he will continue with a timely follow-up to the health situation of the injured people.
