Speed of growth of COVID pandemic begins to slow down: Health

The Undersecretary of Prevention and Health Promotion, Hugo López-Gatell, reported that as of this week we began to see a change in the trend of positive cases of COVID-19 and it is shown that it has reduced the speed of the epidemic.
He added that, if maintained, it could be the beginning of an encouraging change in the growth trend; however, he asked to be taken with caution.
“In the first weeks of the year 2022 we had very rapid changes of increase in the number of cases, due to the omniron variant … However, in epidemic week four, which opened on Sunday, we see an increase of only 12% this is a substantial change, we are already starting to see a change in the trend, this reduces the number of estimated cases that are active to 5.9%,” he said.

He added that you see an intensity of hospital occupancy that is 70% lower than the first epidemic curve, so there is space available in case it is needed.

Ómicron could contribute to the end of the pandemic: López-Gatell
Lopez-Gatell said the ómicron variant produces milder illness, allowing for a more manageable epidemic and could eventually cause immunity in a large proportion of people who become infected.
He added that this behavior could contribute to the end of the epidemic period, not only in Mexico, but in the world.

That the variant #ómicron causes a milder disease, added to vaccination, “allows to have a more manageable epidemic” and will eventually cause immunity in many people which can “contribute to the end of the epidemic period,” says @HLGatell. pic.twitter.com/d1RReAdUTr

He noted that vaccines have been given to 89 per cent of the population and stressed the importance of vaccination; indicated that, in Mexico City, of 325 people hospitalized for Covid, 254 were not vaccinated, that is, 78%.
He again made the call to be vaccinated, mainly to those who have diseases such as cancer, obesity, which can cause them greater risks when infected.
