During this day the Chamber of Deputies unanimously approved the initiative sent by the executive that seeks to create the Universal Guaranteed Pension (PGU).
The measure has already gone through all the legislative obstacles and is in an optimal state to be enacted into law by President Sebastián Piñera.
“Chile has often been ungrateful to its seniors, who after a lifetime of dedication and work, deserve an old age with greater joys, security and hopes,” the president said.
In addition, he added that “our Government has a moral commitment to improving the quality of life of our older adults.”
“Today we have the immense joy of launching the second stage of the improvement of pensions through the creation of the Universal Guaranteed Pension, which will begin to be paid from next February and will improve the pensions of more than 2.5 million people over 65 years of age,” added the President.
Faced with criticism about its financing, Piñera was emphatic: “This guaranteed pension is seriously and responsibly financed and will allow more than 600,000 new beneficiaries to be added to the contribution made by the State to pensions, most of them women and the middle class.”
“I deeply thank Congress for the approval of this urgent and necessary improvement of pensions,” he concluded.
