Repatriation of bodies of 56 migrants who died in Chiapas ends

With the transfer of the last remains, Mexico completed the repatriation of the 56 migrants who died in an accident in Chiapas, while they were transferred in a trailer, on December 9.
According to federal authorities, on January 27, the remains of an adult and a minor from Guatemala, where 42 of the victims originated, were transferred.

12 more people came from the Dominican Republic; one from El Salvador and one more from Ecuador.
In addition, of 104 injured, two Guatemalan adults and a minor remain hospitalized, who is recovering in a DIF shelter in Chiapas.

Guatemala is the second country in number of immigration detentions in Mexico, only surpassed by Honduras.
In 2021, at least 64,733 Guatemalans were detained by the National Institute of Migration (INM). In total, Mexican authorities intercepted more than 228,000 and deported 82,000, of whom 32,427 were Guatemalans.
