The Argentine National Team was nominated as the team of the year at the Laureus Awards, the “Oscars of sport”

The Argentine men’s national team, brand new champion of the Copa America, was nominated as the best team of 2021 in the prestigious Laureus Awards, popularly known as the “Oscars of sport”. The team led by Lionel Scaloni shares the shortlist with the Italian National Team (European Champion), Milwaukee Bucks (NBA champion), the Mercedes Formula 1 team (Constructors’ World Cup Champion), the Barcelona women’s football team (European Champion) and the Chinese Olympic trampoline jumping team. The awards will be presented next April during a ceremony that will be held virtually due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
For its part, the candidates for the award for best male athlete are: Tom Brady (American Football), Novak Djokovic (Tennis), Caeleb Dressel (Swimming), Eliud Kipchoge (Athletics), Robert Lewandowski (Football) and Max Verstappen (Motorsport). While the women’s shortlist is composed of: Ashleigh Barty (Tennis), Allyson Felix (Athletics), Katie Ledecky (Swimming), Emma McKeon (Swimming), Alexia Putellas (Soccer) Elaine Thompson-Herah (Athletics). First awarded in 2000, the Laureus Awards recognize the world’s greatest athletes year after year. In 2019, the captain of the Argentine National Team was recognized with the Laureus Award along with Lewis Hamilton in an unprecedented election, since it was the first time that there was a tie in the vote. In that edition, the Argentine footballer – the first and only to receive the award – and the British driver were above Rafael Nadal, Marc Márquez, Eliud Kipchoge and Tiger Woods.
