Conflict between Russia and Ukraine will not affect Mexico in energy matters: AMLO

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador endorsed the position of “non-intervention” that Mexico expressed before the Security Council of the United Nations (UN) and said he was against one country invading another.
“We are supporters of the policy of non-intervention, of self-determination of the peoples, we do not want invasions, we do not accept that one country invades another, there is no reason, it is contrary to the international law of nations,” he said.

When asked about the conflict, the president took the opportunity to recall the phrase of former President Benito Juárez: “Among individuals, as among nations, respect for the rights of others is peace.”
“Sometimes they forget rulers from abroad and they are metiches,” he added.

“What we do not want is for there to be conflicts, we are in favor of peace and dialogue, of agreements, above all, that the powers, the hegemonic nations act responsibly and that the custom of interventionism and invasions is abandoned forever.”

“Mexico has nothing to fear” 
On the impact on the price of fuels and energy in the world, López Obrador said that Mexico has nothing to fear.
“There is nothing to fear as to us lacking electricity in the event of an aggravation of the conflict between Russia and the United States or other countries over the situation in Ukraine,” he said.
He explained that they have the necessary contracts to receive the fuel, but in the event that it is missing there are other available energies such as hydroelectric and, in extreme cases, coal and fuel oil.
Likewise, López Obrador assured that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) remains aware of the nationals in the European country, as well as the staff of the Mexican embassy in Kiev.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Wednesday during the opening of the organization’s General Assembly that the world is facing “a moment of danger” due to the crisis in Ukraine.
For Guterres, moreover, “Russia’s decision to recognize the so-called ‘independence’ of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions – and subsequent actions – are violations of Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and are incompatible with the principles of the UN Charter.”
