Businessmen perceive that the economy does not improve in Sinaloa

The most recent survey on business perspective of Debate explored the vision of the owners of MSMEs around the situation of their companies in the face of the crisis left by the pandemic, finding by economic analysts Aarón Sánchez, César Valenzuela and Rajid Luna that entrepreneurs in Sinaloa had a pessimistic vision towards the future, but they also disapproved of local and federal economic policies, as they have not felt supported. The economists also analyzed the responses around the perspective of the situation in the country and in the state, finding that, although the economy has had growth in 2021 compared to 2020 locally and nationally, most entrepreneurs do not consider that it has improved. The vision of the country’s economy To have an overview of the economy, it was explored how entrepreneurs perceived the economic situation in the country with respect to 2020, finding that 57 percent said that in 2021 “the country was worse” compared to 2020, while the responses of “better or equal” were equated with 21 percent each. Here, analysts consider it a question that merely reflects the perception of businessmen about conditions in Mexico. The pandemic generated losses and damages that, although it can be estimated, according to the World Bank, its true impact is still being calculated. For 2021, Mexico’s GDP reported annual real growth of 4.8 percent compared to 2020, showing a slight economic recovery, but perhaps not having managed to impact enough to benefit entrepreneurs, economists said. It should also be said that in 2021, primary activities grew 2.9 percent, secondary activities 6.5 percent and tertiary activities 4.0 percent. In fact, when inquiring about the perspective that the participants had on the economy in Sinaloa, 31 percent said that “2021 was better than in 2020”, 23 percent said that they perceived it “the same”, but the majority response showed a perception that the economy was “worse in 2021 compared to 2020″, with 46 percentage points. The reaction of the respondents could be surprising if data from the state economic context are analyzed; although, Sinaloa presented during the pandemic an economic decline, which we can support with the recent data of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi), which indicated that GDP, at constant prices, ended 2020 with the registration of a fall of 7.0 percent in the state, compared to 2019, due to the decrease in all economic areas. Inegi also pointed out that in the first quarter of 2020 the unemployment rate in Sinaloa decreased by 18.36 percent compared to the same period of 2019.But, as the pandemic progressed, these figures were recovering, reflected in a gradual increase in economic competition indices, according to the Mexican Institute for Competitiveness (IMCO), In addition, according to the jobs indicator, by the end of 2021 it reached an average of 3.4 percent growth in that year compared to 2020, according to Codesin. But it fell short of the national average, which was 4.3 percent. In this regard, the economist Aarón Sánchez, and columnist of Debate, commented that the data of the survey imply that even when there are improvements, the economic recovery due to the blow of the pandemic has not yet been fully materialized and is not as good as entrepreneurs would expect. ” The problems persist and continue to affect Sinaloan companies. The deterioration continues,” he said. For his part, Rajid Luna commented: “Today, of all the bad things, so to speak, you could blame the situation we are experiencing (pandemic) and, with respect to the economy, because it is no exception. The people surveyed are living this day by day, so they perceive it worse.” Population consulted In the first installment of this business survey, some characteristics of the surveyed population were mentioned. Here it is also worth mentioning that this statistical exercise was answered by entrepreneurs engaged in trade in 50 percent of cases, there were also 42 percent of service companies and 8 percent of the industrial rate. As for schooling, 62 per centEnto of the business people in Sinaloa said they had a bachelor’s degree, that is, they were the majority, this caught the attention of the economist César Valenzuela, who thinks that the fact that there is a 31 percent who have a postgraduate degree, could mean that very possibly “there is a very strong level of underemployment and self-employment”, that is, that a proportion of people in the survey, possibly, not finding opportunities in their area of expertise, they create a company. In this regard, Codesin mentions that until the third quarter of 2020, at least 12.5 percent of the Sinaloan population was underemployed or underemployed. In the Debate survey it was also reflected that there are eight percent of entrepreneurs who have only high school or a technical career, that is, according to Valenzuela, they are people who have found a life opportunity when starting a MSME.
