Dr. Claudia Albornoz: “Only 15% of the total number of surgeons in the country are women”

With the aim of counteracting the great gender disparities in the surgical world, the “Development Program for Female Surgeons”, promoted by Johnson & Johnson, with the first call activities. 
According to Dr. Claudia Albornoz, president of the Department of Surgeons of the Society of Surgeons of Chile, currently only 15% of the total number of surgeons in the country are women. “Women remain in the minority, however, there has been a progressive increase and the same trend is expected to continue. It is necessary to make visible the importance of female surgeons so that they are a model for the new generations of students and thus be able to increase female representation in the specialty“, explains the professional.
In this scenario, the program aims in this first stage, a representative participation of the different specialties and realities faced by women surgeons throughout the region that will allow an even better understanding of what the current situation is and identify how and where action should be taken to eradicate it.
Initially aimed at women surgeons from Chile, Argentina, Peru, Ecuador and Uruguay, in any of the training instances in which they are, this project is coordinated by an internal team called Women Leadership & Inclusion (WLI) South Latin America, who in various areas seek to educate and enhance the development of female leadership. 
“CWe believe that women are catalysts for creating healthier communities. This project only perpetuates this legacy of empowerment and equity. Accelerating its development and progress at all levels to counteract the reality that challenges us today will not be possible without working together” comments the vice president of Johnson & Johnson Medical Devices, Tulio Oliveira.
