Russian President Vladimir Putin is adamant and does not intend to back down from last week’s invasion of Ukraine. On Sunday, the president spoke with his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, and warned him that he will obtain “his objectives” in the neighboring country “by negotiation or by war,” the French presidency reported. According to Elysee sources, Putin told Macron that it was “not his intention” to attack Ukrainian nuclear power plants. During their nearly two-hour conversation, Macron found Putin “very determined to achieve his goals,” including the “‘denazification’ and neutralization of Ukraine.” In their previous exchange, Macron had issued a stark warning from Putin: he said “the worst is yet to come” and claimed that Moscow intends to take control “of the whole country.” On Sunday, Putin also held a telephone conversation with his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who asked him for “an urgent and general ceasefire” that allows “to find a political solution and the urgent opening of humanitarian corridors” in Ukraine for the evacuation of the civilian population. According to The Ukrainian authorities, more than 2,000 civilians have been killed since the start of the invasion. The number contrasts with the figures of the UN (United Nations Organization), which, this Sunday, reported 364 civilians killed.
