The US does not see “sustainable” that Poland transfers its fighter jets to it

The Pentagon does not see “sustainable” Poland’s proposal to move all its MiG-29 fighter jets to Germany to make them available to the United States at the US base of Ramstein, in German territory, officials said on Tuesday.
U.S. Defense Department spokesman John Kirby said in a statement Tuesday that his country is consulting with its allies and partners on security assistance to Ukraine, given that the Polish initiative “shows some of the complexities that this issue presents.”
“The prospect of fighter jets at the disposal of the U.S. government departing from a U.S.-NATO base in Germany to fly over airspace over Ukraine, disputed with Russia, raises serious concerns for the entire alliance,” Kirby said.
According to the spokesman, for the US it is not clear that there is “a substantive justification” for this measure.
However, he assured that Washington will continue its consultations with Poland and NATO allies on this issue and “the complicated logistical challenges it presents.”
The Undersecretary for Political Affairs of the State Department, Victoria Nuland, also referred to this issue on Tuesday in an appearance before the Foreign Relations Committee of the US Senate, where she assured that Poland has not coordinated with her country on this issue.
Poland “is ready”
“I was at a meeting where I should have heard something about it, just before what I think is a surprise move” by Poland took place, Nuland said.
The Polish government announced on Tuesday its willingness to move all its Russian-made MiG-29 fighter jets to Germany to make them available to the US at the Ramstein base.
Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau revealed in a message on his social networks that Poland is “prepared” to deliver its fighters, after Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki on Monday denied reports that Warsaw was going to directly transfer those fighter jets to Ukraine.
In his message, the Polish minister did not specify whether the final destination of this weapon will be the Ukrainian Air Force.
Kirby stressed that Washington has been in contact with the Polish executive since the announcement and insisted that “the decision to transfer aircraft owned from Poland to Ukraine rests with the Polish government.”
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine entered its thirteenth day on Tuesday, having killed or injured 1,335 civilians, according to the latest tally from the UN Human Rights Office; a figure that the State Emergency Services of Ukraine raise to more than 2,000 civilian deaths.
