“The Alley of Lost Souls” (“Nightmare Alley”, in its original English) the multi-nominated for an Oscar by Mexican director Guillermo del Toro, arrives this Wednesday, March 16, in the catalog of the Star+ platform. The film based on the novel by William Lindsay Gresham, has four nominations (Best Film, Best Production Design, Best Cinematography and Best Costumes) for the Academy Awards, which will take place in its 94th edition next Sunday, March 27.
Starring Bradley Cooper, the film develops the story of the charismatic but unfortunate Stanton Carlisle who earns the trust of the clairvoyant Zeena (Toni Collette) and her mentalist husband Pete (David Strathairn), in an amusement park where he will meet Molly (Rooney Mara). Skillful, Carlisle creates a method to deceive the wealthy elite of New York society, a path that will cross him with a mysterious psychiatrist (Cate Blanchett), with whom he allies but who at the same time could be even more dangerous than he imagines.
Recommended by Martin Scorsese himself, in an opinion column published in the Los Angeles Times, “The Alley of Lost Souls” is the second film adaptation, after the feature film directed by Edmund Goulding (1947). It was one of Del Toro’s wishes to be able to bring his version to theaters.
The Mexican director spoke with the journalist Micaela Robles, for Filo.News, where he reflected that for him “the real monster is the human” but to know more details enter here to read the full note.
