20% reduction of AICM flights will begin in July: Jiménez Pons

The federal government will reduce operations at Mexico City International Airport (AICM) from 61 to 50, through a decree, to lower the saturation of the capital’s air port and bring more flights to Santa Lucia.
Rogelio Jiménez Pons, Undersecretary of Transportation, said that Felipe Angeles International Airport (AIFA) will receive between 20 and 25% of the AICM’s operations, mainly from national commercial airlines, as part of the program to reduce the saturation of that air terminal.

In an interview with Ciro Gómez Leyva, on Radio Fórmula, the official explained that the first stage of this cut will begin in July, on flights of Aeromexico, Viva Aerobus and Volaris, mainly with domestic routes that do not have connection problems.
“In July we see the first major cut by airlines, by mid-June, July, it would be the month, and the next major one would be in October,” he said.
In addition, it is contemplated to take some cargo and charter operations to the Toluca International Airport and the Puebla International Airport, for this a decree will be published for cargo flights, which are the ones that produce the most noise.

In this way, said Jiménez Pons, there will be enough space to fix the AICM terminals since Terminal 1, with 70 years old, is the one that requires the most intervention to improve the facilities, and Terminal 2 has foundation problems because some of the side buildings are sinking.
“We have to start taking weight and operation away from the airport to facilitate its operation and gradually improve the service.”
The measure seeks to eliminate 10 to 12 flights a day to allow better operating conditions.
