The Covid-19 pandemic has maintained its downward trend since the end of March with 3.5 million new cases reported in the last week in the world, as well as 12,000 deaths, according to the weekly epidemiological report published today by the World Health Organization (WHO).
These figures represent a decrease of 12% and 25%, respectively, although those responsible for the organization have been warning for weeks that the sharp reduction in the number of tests that are done in the world prevents knowing the real evolution of Covid.
The trend of the last week varies by region as the Americas and Africa have reported increases of 14% and 12%, respectively, in the number of confirmed cases, while the Western Pacific region – which includes China – remains stable.
Europe, Southeast Asia and the Eastern Mediterranean have reported significant reductions of between 26 and 29 %.
In terms of mortality, Africa reported a sharp rise (84%), while Europe reported 24% fewer deaths than in the previous week and Southeast Asia 70% less.
