Bolsonaro defended himself against criticism over the care of the Amazon

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said U.S. President Joe Biden and those of France, Canada and the United Kingdom are “constantly attacking” the country and blaming him for not knowing how to “treat the Amazon.” (Emanuel) Macron, Biden, (Justin) Trudeau, Boris (Johnson), among others, are all the time lashing out at us,” saying “that we don’t know how to deal with the Amazon,” he said during an interview. For the Brazilian president, the opinions of those countries want to “leave Brazil in the background” in the raw materials market, because in this way “theirs are valued.” He even insisted that the country is an “example to the world” in terms of environmental preservation. According to the newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo, Bolsonaro said that “here we have commodities, especially in the countryside. And we compete with some important countries.” He added: “Obviously, countries are interested in leaving us in the background, because the fewer commodities on the market, the more valued theirs. France, the United States, a little bit Australia, which doesn’t have a great power of influence and doesn’t play against us.” In addition, he defended his visit to Russia and said that President Vladimir Putin always maintained a position of recognition of Brazil’s sovereignty over the Amazon rainforest. As for Biden, the criticism was generated during the context of Bolsonaro’s possible trip to Los Angeles to attend the Summit of the Americas, in June of this year.
