Sélvame celebrates suspension of section 5 of the Mayan Train

After the Judicial Branch of the Federation provided the first definitive suspension of section 5 south of the Mayan Train, one of the flagship projects of the government of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, members of the Sélvame collective celebrated the ruling. In recent months, Sélvame, a group made up of activists in favor of the environment, became national news by disseminating a video where Mexican artists such as Eugenio Derbez and Natalia Lafourcade appeared through which they called on the current head of the Federal Executive Power to redirect the works of section 5 south, because that passes through an area where there are a large number of cenotes. Through a video uploaded to social networks, one of the activists announced that he was inside a cave when he learned of the ruling of the federal judge of Mérida, Yucatán, against the National Fund for the Promotion of Tourism (Fonatur) and Fonatur Tren Maya regarding the works of section 5 south of the railway project of the government of the Fourth Transformation. We are here in what they wanted to be section 5. I just learned that the judge granted the definitive suspension against Fonatur and Fonatur del Tren Maya. We have definitive suspension!” celebrates the man almost on the verge of tears. On Monday, Adrián Novelo, First District Judge in Yucatan, granted the appeal for definitive suspension in amparo 884/2022, one of at least five that he has admitted to processing, which have been presented by environmental groups. Although the judge did not publish details about the scope of the ruling, it is most likely similar to the provisional suspension he granted on April 18 of this year, in which he ordered to stop “the execution of works related to the construction, infrastructure, removal or destruction of the biodiversity of the land or any other activity that involves material execution.” We recommend you read: It is worth mentioning that the fastest way for the works of section 5 south of the Mayan Train to resume is to present to the Judicial Branch the Environmental Impact Statement (MIA) of the project, once it is authorized by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat).
