Naked, cyclists ask for safety and visibility

Hundreds of cyclists walked naked this Saturday through the center of Mexico City to demand safety and respect for their rights, as well as to make the pedestrian and cyclist visible and exhibit their vulnerability when circulating on the streets. The 15th Naked Riding of the capital of the country, organized by the global collective World Naked Bike Ride (WNBR), began at 11:30 a.m. at the Monument to the Revolution, bound for the Zócalo capital. Some 500 naked cyclists, most of them men, walked the streets of the city, including the emblematic Paseo de la Reforma, heading to the Zócalo, with the aim of making themselves visible before the eyes of those who, they said, usually do not see them. Along the route, passers-by watched with surprise the cyclists, most of them naked or half-naked, some of whom were only wearing a mask or wearing makeup on their faces. Others also took the opportunity to make the LGBTQ community visible in the framework of gay pride month. The latest report from the Secretariat of Mobility (Semovi) of the capital said that during the first quarter of 2022 at least four cyclists have died in traffic accidents. According to the unofficial count made by activist groups, in 2021 27 cyclists died in Mexico City due to traffic accidents. Mexico City has an extensive network of public bicycles, although the exclusive bike lanes are limited to some of the main avenues of the capital, and lack connection between them. So far this year, due to the high levels of pollution, the authorities of the Megalopolis have activated five environmental contingencies with which the circulation of cars through the city is limited for a few days.
