Paraguayan opposition prepares to contest the presidency in 2023

In April 2023, Paraguay will hold presidential elections. While there is still a year to go, opposition parties have already begun to organize to form a solid coalition that can stand up to the ruling Colorado Party (right). Tomorrow an agreement will be signed in which they commit to carry a single presidential formula. The objective is that finally and after several months of work, dozens of political forces unite and constitute themselves as Concertación. The signing of the document will be in La Casa del Pueblo, headquarters of the Febrerista Revolutionary Party (PRF).

Guillermo Ferreiro, the head of the PRF, was excited by the achievement and said: “It’s really something very interesting, historic. We hope people value it for what it is: an honest attempt to get people to decide and not us.” After signing the Concertación, they will have time until June 27 to request their official recognition from the Superior Court of Electoral Justice. In this way, it will be the first time in the history of Paraguay that the opposition unites in pursuit of victory and run from the political scene to the National Republican Association that governed the last 70 years, less than 2008 to 2012, when Fernando Lugo (left) was president.

The political parties that will give the presentation will be the PRF, the Authentic Radical Liberal party that is the main opposition, National Encounter, Beloved Homeland, National Crusade, Hagamos, Party of the A, Democratic Progressive, Broad Front, Christian Democrat, Paraguay Tekopyahu, Independent Patriots, Mopoco, PMPP, Despertar, Apytere Paraguay, Pueblo al Poder, Patria Nueva and Yo Creo, among others. Finally, on December 18, internal elections will be held in all parties, including those of the opposition, and everything indicates that there will emerge the names of the candidates who will make up the presidential formula.
