United Kingdom: third day of train stoppage

There are already three days of train stoppage in the United Kingdom, and it is currently the largest railway strike in three decades. At the moment only one train in five runs and in a restricted schedule that goes from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Half of the lines are closed and it is stipulated that during Sunday the service will continue to be affected. Railway authorities advised users to only travel “if necessary” and to inform themselves before doing so.

From the train union the demands are concrete. They demand wage improvements that correspond to current inflation and denounced mass layoffs and worsening working conditions. The union’s general secretary, Mike Lynch, said: “In a modern economy, workers must be paid correctly for their work, benefit from good conditions and have peace of mind that they will not lose their jobs” and said that if no agreement is reached, the strike could be extended.

For his part, Boris Johnson, the prime minister, expressed his intention to modify British legislation so that workers who adhere to the strike can be replaced with other temporary ones and thus minimize what he considers the “disproportionate” impact of strikes.
