51 criminal groups operate in MEXICO City
During 2020, the Drug Policy Program (PPD) of the Center for Economic Research and Teaching (CIDE) documented the presence of 150 criminal groups operating throughout the country — most of them arising from the fragmentation of large criminal organizations of the past — and that are no longer dedicated only to drug trafficking, but also to theft. extortion and retail trade in illicit products and substances. Of these groups, 51 have a presence in Mexico City.
The entities where the largest number of criminal groups operate are, in addition to the CDMX, which tops the list, Guerrero, Morelos, Chihuahua, State of Mexico and Michoacán. In each of them, the presence of between 10 and 15 criminal groups was documented.
With the registration of 51 criminal groups operating in Mexico City, the capital is the state where the largest number of criminal groups operate. Although most of them are small gangs dedicated to drug dealing and common crime, there are records of organized crime groups such as the Jalisco Cartel New Generation, the Beltran Leyva Cartel and La Familia Michoacana, the PPD report reveals.
