The Pope said the United Nations “does not have the power” to stop the war in Ukraine

Pope Francis affirmed that the United Nations “has no power to impose itself” and “stop the war” in Ukraine and maintained that “without courage and creativity,” there will be no institutions capable of helping to overcome such conflicts. After World War II there was a lot of hope at the United Nations. I do not want to offend but at this point it has no power to impose itself. To stop a war, to resolve a situation of conflict like the one we are experiencing today in Europe, it has no power,” the pontiff said during an interview with the Telam news agency.

Francis said that “at this moment we need courage and creativity” and warned that without these two characteristics, “we will not have international institutions that can help us overcome such serious conflicts.”
“You don’t get out of the crisis alone, you get out risking and holding each other’s hand. There is the social crisis, this is a crisis of civilization.”

He also considered that “the time has come to rethink the concept of ‘just war’.” “There may be a just war, there is a right to defend oneself, but since that concept is used today, it must be rethought.” In another section of the report, Francis spoke about the region and assured that Latin America “will be a victim until it finishes liberating itself from exploitative imperialisms.” Latin America is still on that slow path, of struggle, of the dream of San Martín and Bolívar for the unity of the region. He was always a victim, and will be a victim until he finishes liberating, of exploitative imperialisms,” the Pope analyzed. All countries have that. I don’t want to mention them because they are so obvious that everyone sees them. The dream of San Martín and Bolívar is a prophecy, that encounter of all the Latin American people, beyond ideology, with sovereignty. This is what must be worked on to achieve Latin American unity. Where each people feels itself with its identity and, at the same time, in need of the identity of the other. It’s not easy,” he added.
