Presidents of the Congress call to “focus on the text, not on the Government or the Convention” before an exit plebiscite

In the framework of the speech he delivered during the closing ceremony of the Constitutional Convention, the President of the Republic, Gabriel Boric, maintained that the exit plebiscite to approve or not the constitutional proposal “should not be a trial of the Government.”
After the act in which the board of directors of the constituent body extended the document to the President, the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Raúl Soto; and his simile of the Senate, Álvaro Elizalde, addressed the words of the head of state.
“We always said that it was a mistake in one way or another to establish a link too close between the future of the government and the implementation of its government program and the plebiscite that is an element that goes in a different lane,” Soto told Emol.
Meanwhile, Elizalde said that “citizens are called to pronounce on the text of the proposal for a new Constitution, not on their assessment of the Government and the President of the Republic himself was clear in his message today.”
In that line, both called to raise the quality of the debate and analyze the constitutional text on its own. “Therefore, focus today on the text, not on the Government or the Convention,” Soto said, adding that “I hope that the Government will also have self-criticism, as I have indicated and the improvements, corrections, changes that are necessary to effectively give certainty and tranquility to the population can be established.”
“I appreciate the call made by the President of the Republic. We have to respect each other. There are legitimate positions regarding the plebiscite and the debate has to be about the future of the country, about the text that has been proposed, without disqualifications and leaving aside secondary aspects that often distract us from what really matters, “said Elizalde.
