Murder of trans activist Agnes Torres sentenced to 45 years in prison

A 45-year prison sentence was handed down against Jorge “N” for the murder of transgender activist Agnes Torres Hernández 10 years ago in the town of Chipilo, Puebla.
The state prosecutor’s office said Jorge “N” is responsible for the crimes of qualified homicide and aggravated vehicle theft. There are three more people sentenced in the case.
He explained that after the investigation it was established that the activist was summoned -under deception- by Jorge “N”, in a ranch in the region where she was surprised by him and his accomplices identified as Agustín N., Marco Antonio N. and Luis Fernando N., who beat and suffocated her.

He added that they later abandoned the body in a ravine known as Xaxocuapatle that belongs to the town of San Jerónimo Coyula, Atlixco.

The prosecutor’s office reported that Jorge “N” must also pay for the repair of material damage 17 thousand 891 pesos; for moral damage, 59 thousand 80 pesos; 177 thousand 240 pesos for death compensation and 110 thousand as payment for the repair of material damage for vehicle theft.

The murder of Agnes Torres
On March 3, 2012, the murder of activist Agnes Torres was reported, while she was on her way to the community of Chipilo to a convivial with several people.
Days later, on March 17, 2012, authorities in the state of Puebla presented those allegedly responsible for the murder.

In 2018, the Criminal Judge sentenced Marco Antonio N. and Luis Fernando N., to 35 years in prison; while Agustín N. was sentenced to 23 years 4 months.
Agnes was a gender identity psychologist and sexual and reproductive rights activist.
After years of pressure, the Plenary of the Congress of Puebla approved – in February 2021 – reforms and additions to the Civil Code to recognize the right to self-perceived gender identity, also known as the Agnes Law, in memory of Agnes Torres, a transgender activist murdered in March 2012.
