Socialist Party calls on former President Lagos to rectify his statements after pointing out that “he was wrong” in letter on exit plebiscite

The secretary general of the Socialist Party, Camilo Escalona, showed his criticism of the letter prepared by former President Ricardo Lagos, in which he distanced himself from the Apruebo in the face of the exit plebiscite. Given this, he pointed out that the former president was wrong with his statements and must rectify his position.
In that sense, the leader of the PS referred to the issue after holding a meeting with the representatives of the historical parties of the center-left, highlighting the confidence that these collectivities will support the proposal for a new Constitution erected from the Constitutional Convention.
On Lagos’ statements, Escalona said that “my opinion is that the president was wrong and I hope he rectifies. He was wrong, because the Approve and the Reject are not the same, the Approve means to provide Chile with a new institutionality, in a democratic and social State of rights that faces the pending issues that led to a social explosion . ”
“Rejection is the past, Pinochet’s Constitution. Approval and Rejection are not on the same level, they are two country options that are different. Consequently, we continue immovably, without a doubt and without hesitation, with the option of approval, because from that base, from that pillar, we can improve the new institutionality in the future, “he said.
In the same vein, on whether the opinion of the former president did damage to the Apruebo, Escalona declared that “President Lagos puts himself in a place that has no floor, that has no base. He, surely looking at a complex perspective that the country has, tries to be above Approval and Rejection.”
“But, in the end, it does not have a floor, a pillar from which to project future political action. We are convinced that the continuous process of perfecting democracy in Chile depends on the Apruebo, on establishing a democratic pillar to build changes in democracy, pluralism and freedom,” he said.
